Damminda is a Professor and Discipline Leader in Business Analytics and Founding Director of the Centre for Data Analytics and Cognition at La Trobe University. Through research, industry engagement, curriculum development and teaching, Damminda has made significant contributions to the advancement of analytics, artificial intelligence and automation. Damminda has supervised 30 PhD students to completion and received the Vice-Chancellor Award for Teaching in 2019.
He has published over 100 research articles on theoretical research in self-structuring AI, human-centric AI, cognitive computing, deep learning, optimisation and applied AI research in industrial informatics, smart cities, robotics, intelligent transport, digital health, energy, sport science and education.
He is a visiting professor at the Lulea University of Technology Sweden and the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
Damminda has won over $5 million in external research funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council, ARC Discovery Projects, Data to Decisions CRC and federal government innovation grants.
Daswin De Silva is an Associate Professor and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Data Analytics and Cognition (CDAC) at La Trobe University, Australia.
Daswin’s expertise is in data analytics, automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and the ethics of AI, Data and Machines.
Daswin received national recognition for teaching excellence in Artificial Intelligence, with a citation for outstanding contributions to student learning at the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) 2021.
He has made significant contributions to curriculum development and pedagogical innovations at La Trobe, in undergrad, postgrad and executive education teaching across AI, analytics and automation. He is the academic lead of the Optus U microcredentials in AI, delivered to all full-time staff at Optus, the second-largest network carrier in Australia. He has supervised six doctoral candidates to completion and supervises seven working on AI’s theoretical, applied and industry topics. He received the La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Award for Mid-Career Research Excellence in 2018 and the Vice-Chancellor Award for Teaching in 2019.
From 2015 to 2020, he received A$ 1.2 million in industry funding for research and development of practical AI, analytics and automation innovations. His research interests are diverse and include computer vision, autonomous learning, active perception, information fusion, cognitive computing, neuromorphic computing, natural language processing, deep emotions, psycholinguistics and intelligent cloud platforms.
He is a senior member of the IEEE, the world’s largest organisation of technical professionals. He hold the offices of chair of the Web and Information Committee, Chair of the Technical Committee on Big Data and Machine Learning, and Secretary of the Technical Committee on Technology, Ethics and Society.
He is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, the IEEE Open Journal of the Industrial Electronics Society and Springer Discover AI.
